The “smart” Chair

//Disclaimer: Wrong technical terms might be used. I am not a product designer nor a mechanic.

What if there was an office chair, functioning the same way your smart phone or your smartwatch does today?

It would do everything a plain office chair does, but “smarter”.

The core idea is simple.

Take any chair that people spend a lot of time on it working, gaming, or whatever. No matter the design, add some basic sensors under its fabric. Place a battery on it to supply the sensors, as well as a wireless charging coil possibly on the armrest. (Charger will be fitted under the desk to touch and charge the chair when placed under the desk at the end of the day)

Then, develop an app that will communicate with those sensors and will send the user push notifications on their smartphone smartwatch, or even straight at their computer screen.

Sensors need to:

  • Monitor your butt touching or not touching the seat, and where exactly.
  • Monitor your back touching or not touching the chair’s back and where exactly.
  • Monitor your arms touching, the armrests or not.
  • As a bonus, I would like a weight scale sensor, to weight the user too.

Now have some experts guide you into ideal posture and time periods without a break, for healthy and efficient usage and program your app accordingly.

The end-user:

  1. Will be prompted after a while to fix their posture when they sit the wrong way. (Health)
  2. Will be prompted to take breaks standing up, when needed. (Health)
  3. Will monitor their daily/weekly “sitting” time. (Data)
  4. Will monitor their weight and keep a record. ( Health / Data )
  5. Will be evaluated in terms of a “healthy” way of working on a scale with stars from 1 to 5. (Ranking)
  6. Will be able to share their working/gaming times with their Stars Level for the day/week/overall. (Social)
  7. Lots of other stuff, that you can imagine.

I think that, if you find the above mentioned smart chair idea interesting, it deserves to brainstorm it a bit more and you will eventually explore the whole range of its dynamic as a brand product.

I will not express my opinion on how far this project can go, but I will be more than happy to get in touch with anyone who might want to listen from me more. Plus feel free to write down any responses.

In case you or your company decides to go for it in to producing something like that, please let me know!

This is my first medium story, so Clap it to encourage me maybe write more ideas like this that I already have in mind.
